Conor McGregor’s long-awaited UFC return may finally be close, despite months of uncertainty. The Irish star has been linked with multiple comeback scenarios, but no deal has been officially confirmed.
Dana White recently admitted talks had taken place, but stressed the promotion was “not even close” to finalising an agreement. Earlier expectations of a White House card clash with Michael Chandler also failed to materialise.
Now, however, optimism is growing. Ariel Helwani has suggested that McGregor’s return during International Fight Week on 11 July is increasingly likely.
Ariel Helwani claims only ‘disaster’ can stop Conor McGregor return

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show this Monday, the veteran journalist outlined why he believes the fight is close to being locked in.
“I continue to say the master of good timing, the beneficiary of the best timing in the history of the sport is Conor McGregor, because he is sitting there, being dramatic here, kind of burning down that meme of the dog and this is fine.
“And I’m telling you, we told you about the meeting two weeks ago. I told you it went well. At this point, I think it would be safe to say that it would be a disastrous situation, something disastrous would have had to happen if he’s not fighting on July 11th.”
The comments contrast sharply with White’s cautious stance made weeks ago, suggesting progress behind the scenes may be further along than publicly stated.
Uncertainty remains over Conor McGregor’s opponent
Even if McGregor returns on that date, his opponent is still unclear. Several previously rumoured options are no longer available.
Michael Chandler is now scheduled to face Mauricio Ruffy at UFC Freedom 250 on 14 June. Carlos Prates will meet Jack Della Maddalena on 2 May, while Nate Diaz has signed with Most Valuable Promotions and is set to fight Mike Perry on 16 May.
That leaves the UFC searching for a suitable opponent who matches McGregor’s profile. With limited options at the top level, the final piece of the puzzle remains unresolved.
