Kota Kinabalu: Head of State Tun Musa Aman stressed that the unity of Malaysians of diverse ethnicities, religions and cultures must continue to be strengthened for the stability and progress of the nation.
He said Malaysia was born out of the spirit of unity, mutual understanding and shared vision on Sept 16, 1963, when Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak came together to form a unique federation.
“Malaysia is blessed with rich diversity of ethnicity, culture and religion. This diversity should not be a source of division, but rather a strength that unites us,” he said in conjunction with the 62nd Malaysia Day celebration.
Musa emphasised that the role of Sabah and Sarawak in the formation of the nation was significant, including their contribution to Malaysia’s political stability, socio-economic growth and cultural diversity.
However, he said, much more still needs to be done to narrow the development gap in Sabah.
“A stronger Sabah will make Malaysia more resilient. Development must reach every corner of the State so that no one is left behind,” he said.
Musa also reminded that there is no place for racial or religious fanaticism in the country if Malaysia is to continue progressing.
According to him, Sabah is the best example of a harmonious multi-ethnic society living peacefully in mutual respect.
He urged all political leaders to rise above narrow interests and not sow division for political gain.
“Instead, leaders must focus on sound ideas, practical solutions and policies that empower the people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Musa and his wife Toh Puan Faridah Tussin extended their condolences to the families of flood and landslide victims in Sabah following continuous heavy rainfall that claimed lives and caused damage to property.
“In these difficult times, I urge affected communities to remain vigilant and heed the advice of the authorities. Let us extend our assistance so that the recovery process can be carried out in the spirit of resilience and mutual cooperation,” he added.
Musa also called on the people to renew their commitment to solidarity, justice and prosperity.
“Together, with mutual respect and a shared purpose, we will continue to build a peaceful, progressive and resilient Malaysia,” he said, while wishing everyone a Happy Malaysia Day.
