Converge survives Terrafirma, stays perfect

MANILA, Philippines — Converge survived Terrafirma’s strong fourth quarter fightback to hammer out a narrow 105-103 decision to register back-to-back wins in the PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Big man Justine Baltazar swatted away what could have been a game-tying basket by Dyip forward Aljon Mariano inside the last 17 seconds of the game.

And while the Dyip had another chance to steal the win, after coming back from a 16-point deficit, Maverick Ahanmisi missed a four-point attempt just before the buzzer sounded that allowed the FiberXers to escape with the win.

The Dyip dropped to 1-2, having lost back-to-back games where they managed to fight back from a big deficit, only to fall short late in the game.

Big man Justin Arana led Converge with 31 points and 10 rebounds while rookie guard Juan Gomez de Liano chipped in 19.

Baltazar had a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds along with two blocks.

Justin Strings led hard luck Terrafirma with 40 points and 11 rebounds while Juami Tiongson added 17 in the loss.
