KUNAK: Several streetlights at the Simpang Empat roundabout on the Kunak–Tawau and Kunak–Lahad Datu federal roads have been under the Public Works Department’s (JKR) care since 2021, not the Kunak District Council (MDKNK).

MDKNK executive officer Mohd Nazri Pintal said 13 streetlights previously maintained by the council were handed over to JKR.

He was responding to complaints from road users about the roundabout being dark at night, causing accidents, with overgrown grass further obscuring drivers’ vision.

A doctor recently escaped unhurt after his vehicle skidded there at night.

Nazri said the council has referred the matter to JKR for action.

Meanwhile, streetlights under MDKNK such as along Jalan Kunak Spur and town roads continue to be maintained by its technical unit.
