TWO more people were reported to have drowned floods spawned by then-Tropical Depression Maymay and the southwest monsoon, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said, raising the death toll to six.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said it was verifying if the two additional deaths were due to the storm and the monsoon.
“The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council/OCD have a different protocol for reporting casualties from PNP, if they are verified/validated to be caused by the weather systems, they will be added to our report,” the OCD said.
Two of the deaths were attributed to a landslide in Benguet, and the other two to a rockfall in Rodriguez, Rizal.
One person was reportedly injured in Benguet.
The OCD said the rains affected 39,879 families, or 132,956 individuals, in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol, Zamboanga and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
Several local government units in Luzon declared suspension of classes on Friday due to the rains.
In Metro Manila, face-to-face classes in public and private schools in all levels were suspended in the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Manila, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Parañaque, Pasay, Pateros, Taguig and Valenzuela.
All classes were suspended in the cities of Las Piñas, Marikina and San Juan. Quezon City suspended only face-to-face classes for public preschool to senior high school.
In Central Luzon, classes were called off in Bataan province and the cities of Angeles and Olongapo.
There were also no classes in the towns of Angat, Balagtas, Baliwag City, Bocaue, Bulakan, Bustos, Calumpit, Doña Remedios Trinidad, Guiguinto, Hagonoy, Malolos City, Marilao, Meycauayan City, Norzagaray, Obando, Pandi, Paombong, Plaridel, Pulilan, San Jose del Monte City, San Ildefonso, San Miguel, San Rafael and Santa Maria in Bulacan; Apalit, Arayat, Bacolor, Candaba, San Fernando City, Floridablanca, Guagua, Lubao, Mabalacat City, Macabebe, Magalang, Masantol, Mexico, Minalin, Porac, San Luis, San Simon, Santa Ana, Santa Rita, Santo Tomas and Sasmuan in Pampanga; La Paz in Tarlac; and Botolan, Cabangan, Castillejos, Iba, San Felipe, San Marcelino, San Narciso and Subic in Zambales.
In Southern Luzon, Cavite and Laguna declared provincewide class suspensions, but Laguna decided to shift to alternative delivery mode instead.
Several towns in Batangas province also declared class suspensions in all levels both public and private, instead shifting to modular distance learning: San Pascual, San Jose, Nasugbu, Lian, Bauan, Balayan, Calatagan, Balete, Talisay, Laurel, Cuenca, Calaca City, Rosario, Padre Garcia, Mabini, Tuy, San Juan, Alitagtag, Mataasnakahoy, Taysan, Malvar and Taal.
In Rizal province, Antipolo, Cainta, Cardona, Montalban, Morong, San Mateo, Tanay and Teresa declared class suspensions for all levels, while Taytay only suspended daycare up to senior high school.
