Kota Kinabalu: A depleted Sabah squad failed to defend their title at the recent National Arm Wrestling Championship held at Da Men Mall in Subang, Selangor.

The 10-member team only managed eight gold, five silver and four bronze medals to finish second behind Putra Jaya.

Team leader Jolly Johnson said they could have defended their title won for the past two years if they had a bigger squad.

“We only have 10 athletes this year as compared to 25 last year and every one had to use their own money to finance their trip this time.

“I am sure we could have retained our title with some sponsorships. However, as the leader of the team, I am very proud of the performance of the Sabah athletes this year despite the small number and Damsi Abdullah only managed to bring home the left hand overall title,” he said.

Meanwhile, the medal winners were Jolly Johnson (two golds), Joffey Jolly (two golds), Damsi Abdullah (two golds), Raymond Wong (two golds), Earl Dominic (two silvers), Micky Cheah (one silver, one bronze), Rony John (one silver), Alvian Ally (one silver), Juan Garry (two bronzes) and Esmond Ampila (one bronze).
