A disciplinary complaint lodged against Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin over alleged dishonesty linked to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairmanship issue has been described as unfounded and misleading by the party’s leadership.
In a statement issued in Shah Alam on January 31, 2026, Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said the accusation stemmed from a misunderstanding of both the Bersatu constitution and the governance framework that guides political coalitions. He stressed that the party’s constitution clearly vests executive authority in the president, making Muhyiddin the principal leader responsible for administration, policy direction and high-level negotiations.
Tun Faisal explained that the constitution empowers the president to convene and chair meetings of the Supreme Leadership Council (MPT), as well as to engage with leaders of other coalition parties. He said such engagements, including discussions with the PAS president, fall squarely within the president’s legitimate executive role and do not require prior approval from the MPT.
According to him, there is no constitutional clause that prohibits the Bersatu president from holding negotiations or preliminary discussions with coalition partners. He added that meetings between Muhyiddin and PAS leaders should be understood as exploratory talks involving ideas and proposals, rather than as final or binding decisions.
Tun Faisal clarified that any proposal concerning PN’s structure, including suggestions involving a presidential council or an executive council, would only carry official weight after undergoing deliberation at the committee level. He said such matters must first be scrutinised during pre-council discussions before receiving approval from either the PN Supreme Council or the Bersatu MPT.
Addressing claims that Muhyiddin had lied about the possible restructuring of PN, Tun Faisal said references to the potential irrelevance of the PN chairmanship were analytical observations rather than declarations of policy. He argued that explaining the logical consequences of a proposed structural model could not be equated with making false statements.
He also pointed out that the disciplinary complaint relied entirely on an internal letter authored by Muhyiddin and addressed to the presidents of PN component parties. The letter, he said, was confidential in nature and had been leaked by unknown parties before being circulated privately. Tun Faisal noted that the correspondence was never intended as a public statement, nor was it released through any official Bersatu platform.
According to him, internal documents that are taken out of context following an unauthorised leak cannot reasonably be used as the basis for allegations of dishonesty or disciplinary misconduct.
Tun Faisal concluded that the complaint was fundamentally flawed, citing a failure to distinguish between negotiations and final decisions, as well as a misreading of the president’s constitutional powers. He maintained that Muhyiddin had acted within the bounds of the party constitution and that the accusation of lying did not amount to a disciplinary or legal offence.
