Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stood firm, distancing himself from the swirling controversy surrounding Najib Razak's alleged "supplementary order" for house arrest. Amid Najib's legal maneuvers seeking the production of this order, Anwar emphasized the sacrosanct authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers over the pardons board, deflecting questions and urging focus on national stability.

Speaking after Friday prayers in Kajang, Anwar firmly declared his reluctance to engage in discussions regarding the contentious "supplementary order," deferring its jurisdiction to the pardons board under the absolute authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers. With a resolute tone, Anwar urged all parties to acknowledge this authority and prioritize national security and stability over divisive debates.

The intricate governance structure of Malaysia's pardons system was highlighted, with each state having its own pardons board appointed by respective sultans or governors, except for federal territories where members are appointed by the king. The Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB), chaired by the king and comprising five members, including the attorney-general and federal territories minister, holds significant sway in matters of clemency.

Najib's bid for a judicial review to compel the government to produce the alleged "supplementary order" stems from its purported issuance during the FTPB meeting on Jan 29 under the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong. His legal recourse underscores the ongoing legal battle, with Najib's sentence in the SRC International case already halved to six years in prison, coupled with a reduced fine.

Despite Najib's legal maneuvering, Anwar emphasized the government's stance against challenging matters involving Malay Rulers in court, asserting a longstanding principle predating independence. Anwar refrained from delving further into the affidavit filed by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, asserting Zahid's actions as Umno president, and reaffirming the government's position on matters concerning the Malay Rulers.

Anwar's stance underscores a delicate balance between legal recourse and deference to traditional authorities, encapsulating the complexities of governance in Malaysia's constitutional framework. As Najib's legal battles persist, Anwar's steadfast refusal to entangle himself in the controversy reflects a commitment to upholding institutional integrity while navigating politically charged waters.
