Borussia Dortmund are mourning club icon Wolfgang Paul, who has died at the age of 86 after a long illness.

Paul was captain of Dortmund's 1966 European Cup Winners' Cup-winning team.

"This news makes us infinitely sad. Wolfgang was modest, down to earth. A loyal soul. An honest man. A truly fine person. A BVB icon. Wolfgang was more than a friend. I will miss him greatly," BVB president Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a statement on Sunday.

Paul was part of Germany's 1966 World Cup squad but did not feature at the tournament in England.
