DTI to expand MSMEs’ access to digital tech

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has partnered with Mastercard to equip local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with the digital resources, tools and skills necessary to thrive in the digital economy.

The DTI signed a memorandum of understanding with Mastercard for a collaboration to expand local MSMEs’ access to digital technology and electronic payment solutions.

DTI said the initiative is intended to improve local MSMEs’ e-commerce capabilities and build their confidence in using digital platforms to access wider markets.

DTI E-Commerce Bureau Director Eryl Royce Nagtalon said many businesses are already selling online.

However, he noted that there is still a need for greater confidence in engaging with customers safely and securely, particularly in accepting electronic payments.

“By working with Mastercard, we hope to bridge that gap and help them get there,” said the official.

Recent data show the rapid shift toward digital commerce in the country.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas E-Payments Measurement Report showed that digital transactions comprised 64.69 percent of all retail payments in 2025.

This was an increase from the 57.45 percent recorded in 2024.

Merchant payments also comprised 74.31 percent of total digital transactions, showing the role of electronic payments in commerce today.

The DTI said going digital would allow small businesses to streamline operations, safely process payments and remain competitive.

However, it noted that full digital adoption goes beyond technology, saying entrepreneurs should also have the skills to navigate digital marketplaces effectively and securely.

Mastercard Philippines country manager Jason Crasto said the company wants to make opportunities more accessible to businesses by giving them both access to digital payment solutions and the knowledge and skills to use them effectively.

The DTI and Mastercard plan to launch practical resources and training programs to help entrepreneurs adapt to changing consumer habits and build long-term business resilience.

“Through our work with the DTI, we look forward to helping more Filipino MSMEs take the next step in their digital journey and unlock new opportunities for growth,” said Crasto.
