Duo fined RM22,000 and jailed for drink-driving

Kota Kinabalu: Two men were jailed and fined a total of RM22,000, by the Magistrate Court, for drink driving, last year.

Mohd Ekhwan Sitarin, 25, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to committing the offence at 1.50am on Feb 23 at Jalan Penampang-Kota Kinabalu, in front of SMK Bahang.

Khoo Kai Ming, 41, also pleaded guilty before Lovely to committing the offence at 2.10 am, on March 4, at Jalan Bundusan, near the Shell petrol kiosk.

They were each sentenced to a day’s jail and fined RM11,000 or another four months.

Read more The charge under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act (Amended 2020), provides for a jail term of up to two years and fined between RM10,000 and RM30,000 and prohibited from holding or getting a driving licence for not less than two years from the date of conviction.

Traffic prosecuting officer, Inspector Mohd Firdaus Che Mustafa told the court that the two were arrested during a roadblock.

The court also ordered both Ekhwan and Khoo to be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for not less than two years from the date of the conviction.

Meanwhile, a 38-year-old carwasher was jailed 10 months for disposing two stolen gold rings.

Alif Aliamat pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to disposing the stolen jewellery belonging to Mark Parera at Sabategas Sinsuran Jewellery Shop, here, on Nov 11, 2023 at 5.50pm.

Alif was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.

Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Suzie S.K told the court that on Nov 9, at 7.07pm, a police report was lodged by the complainant as he discovered his house was broken into and gold ring worth RM3, 000 and a box containing old currencies from various countries were stolen.

Duty Counsel Lim Ming Zhoong, representing Alif, requested for a lenient sentence as he is the sole breadwinner of his family and has two children.

The court ordered Alif to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.
