ECoS launches Solar Rakyat Sabah initiative for households

Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) has introduced a new initiative, Solar Rakyat Sabah, to enable domestic consumers to generate their own electricity through rooftop solar systems.

Under the programme, excess energy generated can be exported to the grid in exchange for credits to offset electricity bills, as part of efforts to promote wider adoption of renewable energy across the StateECoS chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid (pic) said the initiative is expected to benefit up to 4,000 domestic consumers and supports Sabah’s goals of increasing renewable energy capacity and reducing electricity costs.

He said the programme operates on a self-consumption model, allowing households to install solar systems, with options for battery energy storage, while surplus electricity is recorded through a new bi-directional smart meter for billing credits.

Interested consumers can apply on a first-come, first-served basis via the EEISy online platform until the 20MW quota is fully allocated, with further details available on the ECoSwebsite.
