A team of CIA-1 of the Karnal police arrested a wanted accused carrying a cash reward of Rs 5,000, who had escaped from police custody while undergoing treatment at the District Civil Hospital. The accused has been identified as Gurjeet Singh, a resident of Chhajju Majra village in Kharar, Punjab, and presently residing in Delhi.

He was arrested near a toll plaza on the Ambala-Rajpura road on Tuesday evening following technical surveillance and specific intelligence inputs, said Inspector Sandeep Singh. The accused was involved in a robbery attempt and firing at a petrol pump located along NH-44 in the Taraori area on the night of May 2, he added.

He was arrested after a brief exchange of fire with the police on the late evening of May 25. As he had sustained bullet injuries, he was admitted to the District Civil Hospital, Singh said.

On the intervening night of May 28 and 29, Gurjeet managed to escape from the prisoner ward of the District Civil Hospital by giving the slip to police personnel deployed for security. He took advantage of pitch darkness caused by a power cut during a thunderstorm and fled from the ward despite policemen being deployed outside.

He was a major challenge for the Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh police after allegedly executing around 10 robberies in the region. Taking serious note of the incident, Superintendent of Police Narender Bijarniya constituted multiple police teams to trace and arrest him.

Subsequently, Inspector-General of Police, Karnal Range, announced a cash reward of Rs 5,000 for information leading to his arrest. The CIA-1 unit continued its technical monitoring and intelligence-gathering operations, eventually tracing the accused’s location and executing a well-planned operation to apprehend him.

Gurjeet was produced in court on Wednesday, which granted the police one-day remand for further investigation.
