
Kota Kinabalu: A 54-year-old Chinese national was fined RM2,500 or jailed eight months by the Magistrate’s Court here for using a fake e-boarding pass as genuine on Tuesday.
Judge Marilyn Kelvin handed down the sentence to Chang Ye, who pleaded guilty for using an AirAsia e-boarding pass as genuine for a flight from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan.
Chang was charged under Section 471 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 465 of the same code, carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, on conviction.
The offence was committed at about 11.55am on June 26, 2026 at Arrival Hall 3, Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).
The court heard that Chang, a civil engineer, had entered Sabah legally from Kuala Lumpur using valid travel documents and a boarding pass, but subsequently exited through a domestic gate after being misled.
Counsel Aaron Mark Pius, representing Chang, said his client was a first-time offender with no previous criminal record or conviction in alaysia or China. He also told the court that Chang had spent seven days in remand since his arrest.

In another case, a 39-year-old woman was fined a total of RM1,400 or a month’s jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for possessing gambling paraphernalia.
Zehmy Catherine pleaded guilty before Marilyn to purchasing a piece of paper bearing numbers at about 4.30pm on Sept 25 in front of a premises in Inanam here.
She was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both, upon conviction.
Zehmy, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower fine, saying she could not afford to pay a higher amount as she had a child and mother to support.
Yusdi called for a deterrent sentence.
The court also ordered the seized cash to be forfeited to the Government.
