
Kota Kinabalu: A 19-year-old man was fined RM4,500 or 11 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here on Friday for assaulting a man with a motorcycle helmet seven months ago.
Abdul Rahman Herman pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to causing injury to one Khairil Anwar Yahya using a motorcycle helmet at the traffic-light junction at Jesselton Quay, here, at about 1.45pm on March 28.
He was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries up to 10 years’ jail, a fine, whipping, or any two of the punishments, on conviction.
Rahman changed his plea to guilty during mention of the case on Friday.
Earlier, the prosecution told the court that the complainant, a teacher in Beluran, had just attended a Hari Raya function at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) and was walking towards his car parked opposite a logistics company’s warehouse at Kota Kinabalu Port when he was taunted by the company’s several workers.
The complainant became frightened after being surrounded by several workers and reversed his vehicle, accidentally hitting one of their cars.
Several workers then chased the complainant’s vehicle and smashed the driver’s side and rear windows.
The complainant managed to escape and drove to Karamunsing Police Station to lodge a report.
He also told police that he had been threatened to get out of the vehicle while Abdul damaging it.
Police then launched efforts to identify and apprehend those involved.
In a separate case, a mechanic was sentenced to four months’ jail for obstructing a police officer from carrying out his duties.
Mohd Ridzwan Abd Jamil, 26, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to intentionally obstructing police officer one Mohd Eruandiy Abdul Rahman from carrying out his public duties in front of a shop building at University Utama Square, Telipok, at 6pm on Aug 14.
He was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which carries up to two years’ jail, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, on conviction.
The prosecution informed the court that the complainant and 10 police personnel had stopped a Proton Saga found in suspicious circumstances at the said location.
The complainant knocked on the driver’s window, showed his police authority card and ordered the man inside to open the door, but he refused to cooperate.
The man, later identified as Ridzwan, then drove aggressively towards the complainant and the arresting team in an attempt to escape.
He rammed a Perodua Alza driven by a corporal police, causing damage to its driver’s door and right passenger door.
Ridzwan then reversed onto a road divider, causing the Proton Saga to become immobilised.
He fled on foot towards a forested area through the front passenger door but was apprehended nearby.
Police later arrested Ridzwan in connection with the case.
