Government and administrative services remained affected for the seventh consecutive day across the district due to an indefinite stir by contractual Sewa Kendra employees, demanding permanent appointments and higher salaries.

The protest had started on May 26 over the demands.

People visiting Sewa Kendras for various administrative and government works faced inconvenience as a majority of citizen-centric services are routed through the centres.

On Tuesday, the protesting employees staged a demonstration and raised slogans.

Their district union president Navdeep Kaur said the employees had been serving at Sewa Kendras for the past several years for a meagre salary of Rs 10,500, which she said was insufficient to meet basic household expenses.

She said 82 employees worked across at 14 Sewa Kendras in the district.

The union demanded that their status be converted into permanent employees. She said their salaries should be increased with an assurance that they would continue to work till the age of 58.

The employees threatened to intensify their stir in case their demands remained unaddressed.

Former MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra also joined the protesting employees and extended support to their demands.

He said concerns of the workers deserved serious consideration and urged the government to hold talks with the union to resolve the issue at the earliest.
