
SANDAKAN: Three stilt houses made of temporary structures were destroyed in a fire at Jambatan 5, Kg Gas Tengah here on Wednesday afternoon (pic).
Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung said they received a distress call at 1.41pm before arriving at the scene, about 15km from the station, at 1.55pm.
A total of 14 personnel from the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station, led by Operations Commander Fauziah Samang, Zone 6 chief of the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) Sandakan Jasri Jal, senior commander Jimmy, along with senior officers - Suriyadi Darwis and Yanscales Konin, rushed to the location to carry out firefighting operations.
“The operation was brought under control at 2.19pm and ended at 4.51pm,” he said. Jimmy added that 37 nearby homes were saved after firefighters successfully contained the flames. No casualties were reported.
Also assisting at the scene were personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), Social Welfare Department (JKM), the Emergency Response Team (ERT) of the nearby IOI factory, and the Sekong Community Development Leader Unit.
He said the cause of the fire and estimated losses are still under investigation.
