POLICE have detained five people from the same family, including a 19-year-old woman believed to be the mother of a deceased infant, after skeletal remains were discovered buried at a house in Kelemak, Melaka.
The suspects, aged between 16 and 40, are expected to be remanded on Thursday at the Alor Gajah Magistrates’ Court as investigations continue into the case, which has shocked the local community.
Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said those arrested include the teenage mother, her boyfriend, her mother, her sister and her 16-year-old younger brother.
“The suspects consist of a 19-year-old female teenager (the baby’s mother), her boyfriend, the suspect’s mother, her sister and her 16-year-old younger brother,” he said.
The arrests follow the discovery of skeletal remains believed to be that of a baby buried in front of a house, which was reported earlier on Wednesday.
Dzulkhairi said the case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing a birth.
He also urged the public to refrain from speculation that could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
Earlier, a witness said she was initially unaware of the seriousness of the incident when she noticed a police presence in the neighbourhood at around 9am while visiting her sister, who lives in the same residential area.
She said she had assumed it was a routine matter until forensic officers were seen examining the scene linked to the shoclking discovery.
The house where the remains were found is located opposite a vacant unit, with police observed digging the ground in the compound using hoes in search of evidence.
Forensic teams later left the scene at approximately 12.30pm yesterday after completing their initial examination. - March 26, 2026
