What would you describe friendship as? For many people, it is loyalty, trust, honesty, or being there for someone when they need you. But to me, friendship is something deeper. It is about the time you choose to invest in someone.
Think about it. We all have 24 hours a day. We have responsibilities, work, family, personal struggles, and dreams we are trying to achieve. Yet, in the middle of all these things, we still find time for the people who matter to us. That is what makes time so valuable in a friendship.
You can tell someone you care about them a thousand times, but when you consistently make time to listen to their stories, check on them, share a laugh, or simply sit beside them when they are having a difficult day, those little moments become something meaningful.
To me, friendship is not about talking every single day or being available every second. We all have our own lives to live. It is about making an effort, even when life gets busy. A simple message asking, "How are you?" or remembering something important happening in your friend's life can mean more than we realise.
Sometimes, we get so caught up in measuring friendship through loyalty that we forget to notice the time people willingly give us. Loyalty is important, of course. But time shows that someone is willing to make space for you in their life, not just in their words.
And perhaps the saddest part of growing up is realising that not everyone you call a friend will invest in you the way you invest in them. Some friendships fade, not because of arguments or betrayal, but because the effort slowly becomes one-sided.
So, if you ask me what friendship means, I would say it is the willingness to invest your time in someone without making them feel like a burden.
Because at the end of the day, we cannot get our time back. And choosing to spend a little of it with someone might be one of the most beautiful ways to say, "You matter to me."
