Bryson DeChambeau’s hopes of winning the Green Jacket at this year’s Masters are already in tatters.

After winning the last two events on LIV Golf, DeChambeau entered this year’s tournament as one of the leading contenders to win. But an opening round 76 all but ended those dreams for the two-time US Open winner.

DeChambeau’s old weakness, his irons, saw his round fly off the rails thanks to his wayward approach play. And he had trouble hitting out of bunkers throughout the round too, even failing to get out of the sand on 11.

He hooked a shot out of the fairway bunker on 18, and was caught on a hot mic lamenting his continual left misses. But golf fans think they have the answer to his problems.

Golf fans tell Bryson DeChambeau to switch to normal length irons

DeChambeau uses a unique set of irons, with the same length shaft for every single club, from long iron to wedge. This allows him to swing with the same stroke with every club, but it also causes a wayward left miss.

Fans took to X to tell DeChambeau to finally ditch these clubs after he shot a 76: “Guarantee Bryson plays better with a PGA superstore fitting than he would with his custom irons”.

One fan went into great detail as to why this left miss occurs: “Hey Bryson! ‘Golf Physicist’ here: You’re hooking it because your “home made clubs” are biasing face-to-path left before you even swing.

“When lie angle is too upright, it effectively tilts the clubface plane left of your intended target line (for a right-handed player).”

DeChambeau is known as “The Scientist” for his analytical approach to the game, but that led to fans being confused how someone so data driven could have this clear, fatal flaw: “I’m sure having wedges the length of a 7 iron don’t have any impact at all. I swear Bryson is the dumbest smart person.”

Another fan added: “His short irons are overlength (because of the one length) and tremendously upright – and he’s shocked that he’s missing left?!?! I’m sorry to keep beating this to death, but this is NOT rocket science.”

DeChambeau has clearly had success playing with these irons, but one fan wondered if this was in spite of them, rather than because of them: “I think Bryson would win more if he used more traditional equipment (normal length irons and wedges)

“My theory is that he is so good that he can overcome bad equipment set up. But with a more optimal setup, he would be able to control the ball better than he already does.”

We have been here before with DeChambeau. Oftentimes these major championship misfortunes lead to him blaming golf technology, claiming it cannot handle his high spin rate. Many fans predict that this will be the narrative later in the week.

One fan posted: “Right on schedule, we move on to Phase Two: bashing golf equipment manufacturers. This is truly a “time-honored” tradition.”

Bryson DeChambeau’s comments on his poor iron play at The Masters

DeChambeau lost over a stroke around the green and a stroke on approach on Thursday at The Masters. He lamented his “out of control” irons afterwards.

The American was asked if he needs to play more aggressively moving forwards, and he answered: “Just going to give what the golf course gives me. I have to try to hit my irons better.

“I drove it left numerous occasions. Did a great job on 18. Wind didn’t hurt it like we thought, and that’s this game. That’s the golf course.

“You know, everybody has an ability for weird things to happen, and today I just did not have my irons under control, which is weird. It’s been good coming into it, so..”

DeChambeau proceeded to hit 241 shots on the range afterwards, so let’s see if he found anything for the rest of the week.
