A Gurugram-based web developer, Himanshu Jangra, has been sacked by Starvik Design after a video clip from a stand-up comedy show went viral, triggering widespread outrage on social media.
During a crowd-work segment at a performance by comedian Pranit More, the 23-year-old allegedly said that since he had spent Rs 370 on a plate of chicken biryani for a date, he felt “entitled” to a return on his investment. He also spoke about pressuring the woman to accompany him to a “dark” park despite her repeated reluctance.
The remarks drew sharp criticism for reflecting a disturbing sense of entitlement and disregard for consent.
As the controversy escalated, Vivek Vishwakarma, founder of Starvik Design, confirmed that the firm had parted ways with Jangra. He said an internal review had found no prior workplace complaints against the employee, but the nature of the remarks warranted action.
“What happened outside the workplace has now affected the workplace and I have a responsibility towards the company, our team and the environment we create here,” Vishwakarma said in a video message.
The incident has since triggered a wider debate on misogynistic attitudes in dating culture. Several social media users also criticised More for initially laughing at the remarks instead of challenging them. The comedian has since issued an apology.
