The Nurpur district police busted an interstate drug racket on Thursday evening under the Indora police station jurisdiction, dealing a major blow to local peddlers who had been sourcing heroin (chitta) from the border area.

The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), a specialised wing of the district police, intercepted a Honda Amaze car (PB-06W-4003) at Milwan. During the search, the team recovered a commercial quantity of heroin, weighing 264.6 grams, concealed inside the vehicle’s steering wheel.

Acting on a credible tip-off received during routine checking near the railway crossing on the Ulherian-Milwan road, the CIA team intercepted the car coming from the Punjab side. According to the police, the arrested accused has been identified as Jatinder Singh (41), a resident of Bhartwal (Batala) in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. The vehicle used to transport the contraband has been impounded.

Nurpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kulbhushan Verma told The Tribune that the accused was suspected to be the kingpin of the interstate racket. “The accused will be produced in court to seek police remand so that his drug network, background and financial transactions can be thoroughly investigated,” the SP said. Preliminary investigations reveal that Singh was active across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, and already faces three separate NDPS Act cases in these states.

Three arrested in Kandwal

In a separate crackdown during night patrolling near the interstate Chakki bridge on the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway (NH-154) in Kandwal, the CIA team arrested three more Punjab residents with 25.65 grams of heroin. Following a tip-off, the team intercepted the trio and recovered the contraband. They have been identified as Arjinder Singh (42) of Amritsar city, Ajay Kumar (28) of Amritsar district, and Arvinder Kaur (21) of Tarn Taran district. The Nurpur police registered an FIR under Sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act and initiated further probe.
