Chinese New Year season is where you can always see people sending mandarin oranges, dried meat and red hampers.
Mandarin orange is an auspicious symbol of good fortune and prosperity. We usually give out as blessings to the receiver in pairs, even number (2, 4, 6, 8 pieces) or a whole box. The orange colour looks beautifully golden and the fruit itself looks like gold. Even the chinese word for mandarin, "kam" sounds like gold! We believe it can bring richness and luck to the receiver.
This was a funny story that happened to me recently. A business partner wanted to send me a box of mandarin oranges. The delivery rider called to say he has reached my office area but was not sure how to get to my block. My office area can be a little confusing, so my usual SOP is to mention 7-11 as the landmark (it always works, except this time 😅).
Me: Can you see a 7-11?
Rider: Ya ya, got.
Me: Ok, just take the lift there, that's my office block.
Rider: Ok. coming.
*After awhile, still no sign of him*
Rider then called, "I am up at your floor, can see office ABCD but still cannot find yours".
Only when he mentioned company ABCD, then I realized he was at my old office building which has a 7-11 and a lift there too! 🤦♀️
Me: Alamak! Wrong office! It's ok then, brother. You may take the oranges ya.
Rider: Huh, sure?
Me: Ya, you may have it as we already have a few boxes.
There is no point asking him to send all the way to my current office or house which is quite far from my old office. He sounded really happy after that and I can hear a smile over his tone of voice 😊
