Improving Sabah infra priority, says Minister

Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister III cum State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said the government is dedicated to improving infrastructure in Sabah, recognising its critical role in supporting the engineering sector.

He said infrastructure development is a primary priority for the government.

Shahelmey further emphasised the importance of engineers using technological breakthroughs such as Internet of Things 4.0, Artificial Intelligence ChatGPT, and Building Information Modelling.

He made the remarks at the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch 45th Annual Dinner he attended as the guest of honour at Hakka Hall.

Also present was IEM Headquarters President Professor Dr Norlida Buniyamin who expressed her appreciation for IEM Sabah’s dedication and commitment in hosting a successful annual dinner.

“Over the years, the Sabah Government has consistently shown unwavering support and appreciation for the invaluable services rendered by IEM members and engineers.

“We express our deepest gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Shahelmey for their unwavering trust and support,” she said.

Meanwhile, Branch Chairman Willy Chin emphasised IEM Sabah’s role in ensuring the engineers have the resources and support needed to succeed.

“We cannot overlook the pressing issues of power supply and water supply shortage that significantly impact the development and livelihood of the people in Sabah,” he said.

He said IEM Sabah with their pool of expertise could contribute to the State Government’s efforts in finding effective solutions which in turn make a significant impact on resolving these critical issue in Sabah.

Meanwhile, the event’s highlights include embracing the theme “The Past, Present, and Future,” honouring the past IEM Sabah Chairman, supporting Sabah’s Engineering Industry, in which the IEM Sabah Branch plays a significant role, and emphasising the vast opportunities for Sabah engineers as Indonesia’s Capital City relocates.
