The family of a 25-year-old woman, who allegedly died after falling from the building, alleged that despite giving cash, a motorcycle and other household items at the time of the marriage, her in-laws continued to pressure her for additional dowry, including a Royal Enfield Bullet.

Minutes before she allegedly fell from the fourth floor of a building in west Delhi, the victim made distress calls to her family, pleading to be rescued and asking them to care of her six-month-old son.

The woman died after allegedly falling from a building in Dasghara village in Delhi’s Inderpuri area on May 18. The police have arrested her husband and brother-in-law in connection with the dowry death case.

According to her family, the woman called her sister shortly before the incident, saying she was being beaten and abused by her in-laws.

“She kept pleading to take her away from there. She said if something happens to her, take care of her child,” her brother told the media.

About an hour later, the family received another call — this time from her brother-in-law — informing them that she had allegedly fallen from the terrace. By the time relatives reached a west Delhi hospital, she had already been declared dead.

The woman’s family alleged that harassment over dowry began within months of her marriage. “We gave whatever we could during the wedding — cash, a motorcycle, gold ring, television and household items. Later, the demands kept increasing. They wanted a Royal Enfield Bullet, AC, fridge and other expensive items,” her brother alleged.

According to the family, repeated pressure and physical abuse continued over the past three years.

“We are farmers. My father had already taken loans for the marriage, but we kept assuring them we would do whatever we could,” he said.

The deceased belonged to a farming family from Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district and was one of five siblings.

Family members alleged that tensions escalated after the wedding of one of her brothers-in-law on April 25, with comparisons allegedly being made over dowry received in the two marriages. The family claimed they had intervened several times over the past three years and had even approached a village panchayat in February 2024 after allegations of physical assault surfaced.
