Incoming Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth is in talks with Graham Potter.
The Sun says the former Brighton pair have met in recent days.
Potter, who has been out of work since his sacking by Chelsea last season, is favoured by new United director Sir Jim Ratcliffe, should Erik ten Hag be sacked.
Potter and Ashworth worked closely together at Brighton.
Former Chelsea boss Potter has resisted several offers as he waits for the right offer.
