Inquest team revisits hostel

Kota Kinabalu: The Coroner Court on Monday together with interested parties had taken four hours to re-visit the hostel of the religious school where Zara Qairina Mahathir was found unconscious in July 2025.

Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan had made the locus In quo at the school for second time together with the team from conducting officers, Zara’s mother team counsels, Zara’s father team counsels and counsels for the five children charged at the Court for Children in connection with Zara’s incident.

Several deponents namely, students, teachers and others were also participated in the visit which started around 10am until 2pm.

So far about 80 deponents had testified in the inquest including experts, teachers, police, students and parents.

Zara, 13, was found unconscious under her hostel building on July 16, 2025 and died the following day in the hospital.

Her remains were exhumed on Aug 9, 2025 and a postmortem was performed on Aug 10 at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

On Aug 20, 2025, five minors, who were give the pseudonyms Student A, B, C, D, and E, were charged with using insulting words against Zara.

The Inquest will resume today (Tuesday) with Zara’s step sister to be the 81 deponent to testify.
