SHAH ALAM – Residents in several areas across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Melaka recount experiencing tremors following a 4.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Batu Pahat on Tuesday.
Social media posts showed that the tremors were felt between about 4.50pm and 4.57pm and lasted for several seconds.
A Threads user, Fatihahazanan92, said she was startled after feeling the tremors but did not receive any warning.
“It was so startling, I thought something had happened. It was strong but I did not receive any nearby earthquake alarm,” she said.
Earlier, a weak 4.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the waters off Batu Pahat at 4.55pm on Tuesday.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.
According to MetMalaysia, the epicentre was located at coordinates 1.7 degrees North and 102.7 degrees East, about 27 kilometres southwest of Batu Pahat, Johor.
Tremors from the earthquake were reported to have been felt in Batu Pahat and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, Threads user syahatulmohdtaha shared her experience of feeling as though she was being pushed while sitting on a sofa.
“It felt like there was an earthquake, I was sitting on the sofa and it felt as though someone pushed me.
“The television on the cabinet also moved for about two seconds. Allah, please keep us away from any severe disaster in the Kuala Lumpur area,” she said.
Nursabrina.hamdan also claimed to have felt movement for several seconds at 4.57pm.
“Was that an earthquake? I felt something moving from side to side for a few seconds, in the Puchong Utama area,” she shared.
In Muar, Threads user Jengkolubi88 also questioned whether an earthquake had occurred after feeling tremors at around 4.55pm.
“Was there an earthquake? There were tremors here in Muar at 4.55pm just now, did you feel it?” she asked.
Another user, rozymsaleh, said she felt the tremors while she was in Tanjung Minyak, Melaka, between 4.50pm and 4.55pm.
“I was relaxing on the sofa when I suddenly felt a tremor, but it only lasted for a short while. Was there an earthquake somewhere?
“You cannot say it was a jet flying past because there was none,” she said.
