Kota Kinabalu: A self-employed man jailed 12 months for committing mischief by cutting a 13 feet long cable belonging to a telecommunications company.
Datu Mohammad Ali Mohd Ghani, 32, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to cutting the cable belonging to Telekom Malaysia Berhad at 11.45pm on Jan 9 at the roadside of Jalan Mergastua, near SJK (C) Chung Hwa, Likas here.
He committed the offence along with two accomplices still at large.
The charge under Section 431A of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both, on conviction.
Earlier, the magistrate was informed by the prosecution that Ali and his two accomplices were seen cutting the cable by patrolling police and that they tried to escape.
The police manage to catch Ali while the other two escaped, said the prosecution, adding that police also seized the cable, iron saw and a cutter from the scene.
Ali requested for a lenient sentence.
Meanwhile, a 36-year-old shop assistant was fined RM100 or two weeks’ jail for fraudulently had RM300 deposited in her bank account three years ago.
Suriati Abdol Rahman pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles of having the money in her CIMB Bank account, in which she failed to give a satisfactory explanation on how she obtained them on Dec 15, 2020.
The offence under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance, provides a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months jail or both, on conviction.
In another case, a man was jailed one week for having goods believed to be stolen.
Abdul Firas Ariffin admitted to having two boxes of headlamp, a can of universal butane fuel and a box of mini foot pump belonging to Mr DIY, at 7.15pm on the first floor of the Imago shopping mall on Feb 23.
The charge was also framed under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance.
Unrepresented, Firas applied for a leniency.
He was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.
