James Dolan has confirmed the New York Knicks have accepted an invitation to visit the White House, putting the newly crowned NBA champions in line for a post-title tradition that has not been straightforward under Donald Trump.

The Knicks ended their 53-year title drought by beating the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals, giving New York its first championship since 1973.

With the trophy secured, the next major step is now expected to come away from Madison Square Garden. Dolan’s answer made clear the franchise plans to go.

James Dolan confirms New York Knicks accepted Donald Trump White’s House invite

Dolan addressed the invitation in comments shared by WFAN on X, explaining that the Knicks have accepted while final details still need to be arranged.

“We just did receive an invitation from the White House, which we accepted. We still have to figure out the details, et cetera, but yes, of course,” Dolan said.

Dolan also explained why the visit carries a personal connection for him, pointing to his long relationship with President Donald Trump after inviting him to a Knicks Finals game at Madison Square Garden.

He added, “Look, I invited the President to come down for the game. He is a friend. I’ve known him for 30 years and I’m very proud to bring the team to the White House.”

The acceptance is notable because Dolan is not treating the invitation as a complicated political calculation.

He framed it as a championship tradition, a team honour and a visit involving a president he has known personally for decades.

New York Knicks would end the NBA’s Donald Trump-era White House gap

The Knicks’ planned visit stands out because NBA champions have historically been invited to the White House, but that tradition effectively stopped during Trump’s first presidency.

The Golden State Warriors did not visit after their 2017 or 2018 titles, with the 2017 invitation withdrawn after Stephen Curry indicated he did not want to attend.

The Toronto Raptors did not visit after their 2019 championship, while the Los Angeles Lakers did not make the trip after winning the 2020 title, with COVID-19 and political tension both part of the backdrop.

That history would make the Knicks the first NBA championship team to visit the White House during a Trump presidency if the trip goes ahead as accepted. It would also mark a clear shift from the recent pattern, where NBA title teams either did not attend or never reached the traditional ceremony.

For Dolan, the timing makes the decision easier to understand. The Knicks are coming off their most important season in more than half a century, and the White House visit would place them back inside a familiar championship ritual.

Player attendance and the exact date still need to be settled. But Dolan’s acceptance already gives the Knicks’ title celebration a historic angle beyond the parade, the trophy and the end of New York’s long wait.
