Kota Kinabalu: A total of 21 junior squash players participated in the Fitness Awareness Campaign programme organised by Kota Kinabalu Squash Association (KKSA) last weekend.
The programme, catered for the association’s elite junior players, was held in cooperation with Sabah Sports Council and Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) Heal Research Unit, Faculty of Allied Medicine and Health Science.
Professor Dr. Dg Maryama Ag Daud, who heads the unit, said the programme designed by her was to focus on the practical aspects of fitness tests as well as demonstrations of the importance of exercise and stretching.
According to her, Dr. Mariam George Matthew, who is one of the sports medicine consultants at Queen’s Hospital Elizabeth, was also engaged to share her expertise through a special talk session.
“It is very important to ensure the participants understand the basic aspects of fitness to avoid the risks of injuries while training or participating in tournaments.
“Apart from identifying their own strengths and weaknesses through this programme, they were also given the opportunity to improve their thinking skills to become better players competing in tournaments either at the national level or internationally,” she said.
Meanwhile, KKSA’s chairperson Jessye Linog hopes the programme will help Sabah Sports Council and Sabah Squash Association in the development of the sport.
