Following the information, the Israna SHO, fire brigade personnel and divers reached the spot and launched a search operation. The divers recovered the body of the woman around 7-8 km away from the spot where the couple had drowned, but the search for her husband is still underway.
The elderly couple has been identified as 60-year-old Murari Lal Goyal and his 56-year-old wife, Kamlesh, residents of Assandh in Karnal. Murari Lal Goyal owned a rice mill and an arhtiya shop in Assandh. His son, Gaurav, assisted him in managing the business.
According to family members, Murari Lal and his wife left Assandh on their scooty in the wee hours of Monday morning.
Gaurav Singla, a close relative of the couple, said his sister is married to Gaurav, the son of Murari Lal Goyal. He added that their business was doing well and there was no tension in the family. The couple had left home at around 4 am on Monday. When the family could not find them at home, they started searching for them.
Later, the family was informed that their scooty had been found parked near the canal bridge close to Sewah village. Family members reached the spot and identified the vehicle. The couple had left their slippers on the scooter before entering the canal.
