SANDAKAN: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has set its sights on contesting one or two Chinese-majority parliamentary seats in Sabah under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) banner in the next general election.
Its President Datuk Chin Su Phin identified them as Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau out of the 25 in Sabah.
“LDP will seek the opportunity to represent GRS, especially the Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan seats.
“LDP has been serving the Chinese community tirelessly and with dedication, including my past appointment as chairman of Barisan Nasional (BN) Sandakan division.
“I believe LDP’s commitment and track record will garner the support of Chinese electorates,” Chin said when officiating the Sandakan Joint Divisional Conference, Sunday.
He said LDP is a strong and stable political platform with 30 years of history.
He said the party has consistently upheld its political principles and position, earning the recognition and support of the people.
Earlier in his speech, Chin said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took over the reins of the country as the Prime Minister in November 2022 during an extremely challenging period.
“Since Anwar took office, our country has endured the Covid-19 pandemic, the financial aftermath of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, and on a global scale, the impact of the Russian-Ukraine war, Israel-Gaza conflict and the most recent Iran war that had caused a drastic surge in oil prices and escalating inflation.
“Despite the adversities, Malaysia maintains its political stability and continues to enhance its standing among the international community.
“Under Anwar’s leadership, Malaysia has positioned itself as a leading investment destination, attracting major foreign investors who have expressed their confidence in the development potential of our country,” Chin said.
He said the party understands the concerns of Malaysians over the increasing living costs and the reform measures taken by the government, such as expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) and implementation of e-invoicing.
“While the reforms are necessary for the betterment of the country. we urge the government to listen to the grievances of the people and make improvements to ease their burden.
“At the same time, we have to understand that reformation is always a struggle at the initial stage, but it shall deliver lasting benefits for the nation in the long run,” he said.
Chin said there had been calls for Anwar to step down as Prime Minister and a change of federal government during the recent Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, even though the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government’s term officially expires by the end of 2027.
“To date, Anwar has served as Prime Minister for little more than three years. In contrast, Barisan Nasional (BN) had governed Malaysia for six decades. It would therefore be unfair to compare Anwar’s achievements over the past three years with BN’s record for over 60 years in office,” he said.
“Malaysians should continue to support the Unity Government in completing its full term, with the general election to be held upon the expiry of its mandate next year.”Since Anwar took office, he reported that Malaysia had recorded USD123.8 billion in international reserves, and a record high RM378.5 billion in investments.
