Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta moved to the field on Monday morning and conducted surprise inspections in various parts of the city to check sanitation.

According to officials aware of the matter, Local Bodies Minister Harjot Singh Bains is monitoring the situation at the ground level through video conferencing.

The surprise inspections started around 7am and continued for over an hour. Pavilion Mall, book market, vicinity of MC Zone A office, scooter market near Model Town, Cheema Chowk, Division Number 3 chowk and Partap Chowk were among the areas inspected. Other senior officials also conducted inspections in their respective areas.

Strict directions were issued to officials concerned to ensure cleanliness across the city.

Gupta said the city has been divided into 10-km stretches and an official assigned to ensure cleanliness of each stretch. All civic body departments, including health branch, buildings and roads branch, operations and maintenance cell and tehbazaari wing, have been directed to work in coordination and ensure cleanliness.

After the inspections, the MC chief conducted a meeting with senior officials.

She said minister Bains was monitoring the cleanliness drives and updates were being taken regarding surprise inspections on a regular basis.

She warned the officials of strict action in case of anomalies, if any, at the ground level.

Gupta said surprise inspections will continue in the coming days and appealed to the residents to support the civic body in keeping the city clean by not dumping waste and garbage in open spaces or vacant plots.
