The fortunes of these leaders seem interdependent. Mahathir has used Anwar as a punching bag for most of his career. Now one is likely to be gone for a good while the other soldiers are on in search of that elusive dream of being a premier of the land.

It's expected. Tun Mahathir finally came to the end of the road in his long career as a politician when he lost his seat as an incumbent MP in Langkawi.

It is probably a fitting end to a long career that started in Langkawi itself.

This island of legends was a wasteland cursed by Mahsuri a legendry princess, where he first served his career as a newly appointed medical doctor after graduating from medical school.

Langkawi's economic development and eventual rise as a tourist destination may be attributed largely to Mahathir's determination to make it a success throughout his career as a Prime Minister for 22 years and later as its Member of Parliament.

He may now retire with a broken heart with the knowledge that he would never be able to correct the wrong-doing of his own proteges in a party he founded that brought havoc to the country because they fell under the evil spells of corruption.

On the other hand, Anwar's tale of success and failure has Mahathir looming in the background, always! Until now, Mahathir made him his deputy once, then sacked, sent him to jail and again promised to hand him the premiership only to break it as recently as two years ago.

Anwar Ibrahim will now soldier on as head of the opposition and be a PM in waiting for another term, perhaps.

That remains to be seen. But for now it's clear both men who dominated Malaysian politics for half a century will not be across one another in Parliament.

Meanwhile, another nemesis of Mahathir an octogenarian Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah who had tried to unseat him in 1987 lost his Gua Musang seat he has held during his entire political career.

We have called upon all septuagenarian, octogenarian and nonagenarian to withdraw and hand over the reins to the younger ones.

This is the beginning of the end of the old guards to vacate the Malaysian political landscape.

The time has come for young leaders to come forward and take the nation to greater heights and say selamat bersara to the old guards!
