Malaysia is more than a place we call home. It is the sound of different languages filling the air, the aroma of food from different cultures drifting through neighbourhoods, the celebrations that bring us together, and the countless little moments that remind us that, despite our differences, we belong to one another.
To me, being an Anak Malaysia is not simply about where we were born or the colour of the passport we carry. It is about the way we live, the way we treat one another, and the way we choose to celebrate the beautiful diversity that makes our country unique.
Growing up in Malaysia means growing up surrounded by stories. We hear Malay, Chinese, Tamil, English and many other languages spoken in our homes, schools, workplaces and communities. We celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Christmas, Gawai, Kaamatan and many other meaningful occasions. We may have different traditions, beliefs and backgrounds, but there is something wonderfully Malaysian about being invited to share in one another's celebrations.
And, of course, there is food.
Ask any Malaysian what makes Malaysia special and food will almost certainly be part of the answer. From nasi lemak and roti canai to char kway teow, chicken rice, banana leaf rice, laksa and countless kuih, our food tells the story of our people. Sometimes, the best conversations happen around a table, with everyone reaching for one more dish and arguing playfully about which state makes the best version.
That is Malaysia.
We may disagree about many things, but put a plate of good food in front of us and suddenly we have something in common.
Yet, being an Anak Malaysia goes beyond food, festivals and traditions. It is also about the moments that happen in ordinary life.
It is the stranger who holds the lift door open when you are rushing.
It is a neighbour sending food over during a festive celebration.
It is friends from different backgrounds laughing together over teh tarik.
It is Malaysians coming together to help one another during floods or difficult times.
It is cheering for our athletes, celebrating their victories as if they were our own, regardless of where they come from.
These moments may seem small, but they carry something much bigger: the spirit of kita.
Kita means us.
Not just me. Not just you. Us.
In a country as diverse as Malaysia, unity does not mean that everyone has to be the same. In fact, our differences are part of what makes us Malaysian. We can speak different languages, practise different traditions, eat different food and come from different communities, while still sharing the same sense of belonging.
Our diversity should not be something we merely tolerate. It should be something we appreciate, protect and pass on to the next generation.
As we celebrate Merdeka and Malaysia Day, it is easy to think about patriotism only in terms of flags, songs and grand celebrations. But patriotism can also be quiet.
It can be choosing kindness when nobody is watching.
It can be respecting someone whose background is different from ours.
It can be learning about another culture instead of judging it.
It can be teaching our children to see diversity as a strength rather than a barrier.
It can be supporting local businesses, appreciating our local heritage and preserving the traditions that make our communities special.
Most importantly, it can be remembering that the Malaysia we want tomorrow begins with how we treat one another today.
Being an Anak Malaysia is therefore both a privilege and a responsibility.
We inherit a country shaped by generations before us. They built communities, preserved traditions, crossed cultural boundaries and created a society where different identities could exist side by side. Now, it is our turn to carry that story forward.
We may not all have the same idea of what Malaysia means to us. For some, it may be the kampung where they grew up. For others, it may be the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur, the beaches of Sabah and Sarawak, the food stalls of Penang, the hills of Cameron Highlands, or simply the family home where countless memories were made.
For me, Malaysia is all of these things at once.
It is home in the most meaningful sense of the word.
It is the people who make ordinary days memorable. It is the cultures that colour our celebrations. It is the food that brings us to the same table. It is the traditions we inherit and the new traditions we create together.
And perhaps that is what it truly means to be an Anak Malaysia.
It means understanding that our story is not written by one race, one culture, one language or one generation. Our story is written by all of us.
Every shared meal.
Every open door.
Every helping hand.
Every celebration.
Every friendship that crosses a cultural boundary.
Every moment when we choose kita over kita dan mereka.
These are the moments that make Malaysia what it is.
As the Jalur Gemilang flies proudly above us and we celebrate another Merdeka and Malaysia Day, let us not only remember how far we have come. Let us also think about the Malaysia we want to leave behind.
A Malaysia where differences are celebrated.
A Malaysia where kindness is never considered a weakness.
A Malaysia where every child can grow up feeling that this country belongs to them too.
A Malaysia where we continue to say, with pride and sincerity:
This is our home. This is our story. This is our Malaysia.
We are Anak Malaysia.
