Malaysians face MyKad service disruption as new-generation card rollout begins

MALAYSIANS applying for MyKad renewals or replacements may face temporary disruption this week as the National Registration Department (NRD) begins its transition to the new-generation identity card.

NRD said MyKad printing services nationwide are expected to be disrupted from Sept 1 to Sept 7 as the existing card structure is replaced ahead of the new-generation MyKad rollout.

Members of the public without urgent administrative needs are therefore advised to postpone their MyKad renewal and replacement applications until after the transition period.

The temporary disruption is also expected to affect first-time applications for children turning 12.

NRD encouraged parents and guardians to wait before submitting applications, allowing their children to receive the new-generation MyKad once issuance begins in the near future.

“Parents or guardians are also encouraged to wait for a while to allow their children to receive the new-generation MyKad when its issuance begins in the near future,” NRD said in a statement.

The department apologised for any inconvenience caused and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during the transition.

NRD said further updates on the new-generation MyKad would be communicated through its official channels.

The transition means Malaysians with no urgent need for a new card may benefit from waiting until the new-generation MyKad becomes available, rather than applying for the existing card structure during the temporary disruption. - September 1, 2026
