Kota Kinabalu: A 36-year-old lorry driver was charged with having a machete in public without a permit.
Avckson Jiun @ Justin pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus, to the charge. Wednesday.
He is accused of having the 17-inch machete at 2am on Aug 11 this year by the roadside in Kg Suang Parai, near here.
The offence under Section 6(1)/34 of the Corrosive, Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 carries a jail term of between five and 10 years, and whipping, on conviction.
The court set Sept 19 this year for pre-trial case management and ordered Avckson to be remanded further pending the date.
The court could not grant bail for Avckson as he was on the wanted list for a theft case in Kota Marudu unless he can prove to the court that his case in Kota Marudu had been settled.
Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Tham Pou Jin objected to bail on the grounds that Avckson was a wanted person for the theft case in Kota Marudu.
Tham informed the court that the police report stated that Avckson tried to run away from a road block by making a U-turn and caused the police to chase him before managing to arrest him.
Avckson, who was not represented, asked for bail by telling the court that the theft case had been settled.
