MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday conferred the Order of Sikatuna with the Rank of Datu (Grand Cross), Gold Distinction on outgoing Republic of Korea (ROK) Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa in recognition of his contributions to strengthening the Philippines’ strategic partnership with South Korea.
The chief executive bestowed the country’s prestigious diplomatic honor on the South Korean envoy during the latter’s farewell call in Malacañang.
Marcos thanked Lee for his service, saying the envoy’s accomplishments were the result of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice.
The recognition was given to Lee for his significant role in deepening bilateral relations between the Philippines and the ROK, including facilitating government-to-government cooperation agreements and supporting the implementation of existing bilateral initiatives across various sectors.
Lee was also instrumental in promoting high-level official engagements between Manila and Seoul and advancing socio-economic development in the Philippines by encouraging investments in strategic industries such as semiconductors and shipbuilding.
The outgoing ambassador likewise helped expand development assistance through technical cooperation programs, particularly in the areas of health, agriculture, and environmental protection.
The Philippines and the Republic of Korea elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership in 2024, paving the way for broader cooperation in defense and security, trade and investment, infrastructure, development, maritime affairs, and people-to-people exchanges. South Korea remains one of the Philippines’ largest trading partners, a major source of investments and official development assistance, and among the country’s top sources of foreign tourists.
