In the aftermath of the 15th General Election's catastrophic defeat, the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) finds itself in a state of political purgatory, much like a forlorn lover in a one-sided relationship. It's time for MCA to stop clinging to the Barisan Nasional (BN) and make a clean break.
MCA's heyday, which lasted from 1995 to 2004, now seems like a distant memory. In the recent election, they managed to secure only two out of 70 contested parliamentary seats.
Ouch! It's safe to say that MCA's political prowess has faded faster than a cheap magic trick.
Some have suggested that MCA should hitch its wagon to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) to stay relevant. However, that's like trying to fix a sinking ship with a paper umbrella. If Chinese voters wanted PN, they would have voted for Gerakan in the first place. Joining PN would only further weaken MCA, sending it down the same path of irrelevance as its fellow parties.
The key to MCA's revival lies in fair competition. MCA should be brave enough to compete in majority Chinese areas, win or lose. Continuing to be a 'yes man' to the unity government won't help them regain their political mojo. It's time to stand to stand alone.
Let's not forget the elephant in the room: the shadow of DAP. As long as MCA clings to DAP, they'll have a tough time securing 'safe seats' unless Umno generously hands over some majority Malay parliamentary seats. That's like hoping for a unicorn to deliver your groceries.
So, MCA, it's time to snap out of it, break up with BN, and start rebuilding your strength independently.
After all, in politics, just like in love, it's better to be single and ready to mingle than stuck in a toxic relationship.
