Meteor caused bright streak over Mayon Volcano, says PH space agency

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) confirmed that the bright light captured in Mayon Volcano on May 25 was a meteor.

This comes after a video released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) went viral, showing a bright streak of light at the slopes of the volcano as volcanic activities continue

“The event was visually striking, with the Mayon Volcano at the foreground of Phivolcs' video capture,” PhilSA said in a statement.

The agency said that while meteors entered the Earth’s atmosphere daily, most burn up completely before reaching the ground.

Phivolcs also clarified that the meteor did not hit the volcano.
