JOHOR BAHRU - Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has urged Johoreans to exercise their civic duty today, emphasising the importance of national unity once the polls close.

Speaking to reporters after casting his vote at SK Taman Sutera polling station for the 16th Johor State Election, Syed Saddiq declined to comment on the political landscape, citing election laws that prohibit statements that could influence voters on polling day.

“I understand that journalists want me to comment on the political situation, but according to the law, today I cannot make any specific comments, especially those that could influence voters to support a particular party.

“So I have to respect that law, particularly as a Member of Parliament,” he said.

Instead, Syed Saddiq encouraged eligible voters to exercise their democratic right before polling closes.

“What is important is that we all fulfil our responsibility to vote, and after voting, we come together again,” he said.

He said he understood certain locations were experiencing rainstorms that could deter voters to show up thus he advised them to wait for the weather to calm down and only then head out their polling stations.

Syed Saddiq also urged those who have gone to vote to check on their family and friends, inviting those who have yet to cast their vote to go and do so.

"The responsibility to vote is something fundamental, given to as Malaysian citizens that can determine the future of our country.

"It is so fundamental that is enshrined in our Constitution, thus that's why I hope we do not waste this opportunity," he said, adding that every vote is a secret.

Polling across Johor will officially close at 6pm today, marking the end of voting in the state election.
