The explanation was provided by PN deputy secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hasan on January 26, 2026, amid questions from within the coalition over the absence of Muhyiddin’s name from the meeting invitation list. Takiyuddin said the decision was guided strictly by the coalition’s constitution, under which only existing members of the Supreme Council are entitled to attend such meetings.

He noted that following Muhyiddin’s decision to step down, only remaining council members were summoned. Two other senior figures, PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and PN information chief Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin, were also excluded as they had previously tendered their resignations.

According to Takiyuddin, membership in the Supreme Council is not automatic, even for party presidents, unless an appointment is formally made through a council decision. He explained that this provision was intended to preserve institutional order within the coalition and prevent ambiguity over who is authorised to participate in high-level deliberations.

The issue gained traction after an invitation letter for the extraordinary meeting, scheduled for January 29, 2026, was circulated by the coalition. Several leaders from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia questioned why Muhyiddin, who remains the party’s president and a central figure in PN, was not included. The omission triggered speculation about internal rifts and the handling of the leadership transition.

Takiyuddin addressed the concerns by revealing that Muhyiddin had formally communicated his resignation in a letter dated December 30, 2025. The letter was addressed to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and specified January 1, 2026, as the effective date of his departure from the chairmanship.

He said the extraordinary meeting would proceed with three key items on its agenda. The council will first elect a chairman to preside over the meeting, followed by deliberations on whether to accept or reject Muhyiddin’s resignation. The final agenda item will be the appointment of a new PN chairman, a decision expected to shape the coalition’s direction moving forward.

Takiyuddin added that the outcome of the meeting could still alter the current arrangement. If the Supreme Council decides not to accept Muhyiddin’s resignation, he would be required to resume his duties as chairman, in line with the coalition’s rules.

The meeting comes at a critical juncture for Perikatan Nasional, which is navigating leadership changes while preparing for future political contests. How the council resolves the resignation and succession issue is expected to have significant implications for internal cohesion and the coalition’s readiness ahead of the next general election.
