According to XUAN解忧树洞, a woman from Kuantan has never been in a relationship despite being in her twenties. Watching friends around her settle down eventually made her anxious about finding love, so after a close friend shared how she met her husband through a dating app, she decided to give it a try.
That was how she met a man eight years older than her.
He looked young for his age and often joked that people thought he was young enough to date fresh graduates. He ran his own business and frequently travelled between Kuantan and Bentong. Whenever he was in Kuantan, the two would meet for dates.
Their relationship lasted about six months, but she gradually noticed things that did not add up.
She never knew exactly what business he was in, and he never invited her to visit his shop. He also spent long periods on the phone whenever he stayed in Kuantan. When she questioned him, he simply told her she was overthinking.
He refused to let her meet his parents and never introduced her to his friends either.
Her suspicions were finally confirmed when she secretly checked his phone while he was showering.
He was married.
He also had a young daughter, while his wife was even younger than her.
Unable to accept the truth, she initially pretended not to know. She was terrified that confronting him would destroy the first love she had ever experienced.
The truth became impossible to ignore on New Year's Eve.
The couple had planned to celebrate the countdown in Kuala Lumpur, but he suddenly claimed that his business was extremely busy. She eventually went to Velocity with a friend, only to spot him there with another woman.
It was his wife.
When she messaged him asking where he was, he replied that he had just finished work and gone home.
Days later, she confronted him.
He admitted that he was married but claimed his marriage had already fallen apart. According to him, he had only married his wife because she became pregnant before graduating from university. He insisted that he no longer loved her and called the woman his “soulmate”, asking for one year to settle the divorce.
She eventually decided to give him another chance.
But things did not improve.
After disappearing throughout the Chinese New Year period, he finally returned just before Chap Goh Mei with a cake and an apology. He then took her to Cameron Highlands.
During the trip, he casually revealed that he had just brought his child there and thought it would be a romantic place for couples.
The revelation left her heartbroken.
She realised that while he might think of her occasionally, he had never truly made a place for her in his life.
Now, she feels trapped in a relationship where she is only remembered when he is bored, lonely or needs someone.
For her, the painful question remains: was she ever truly his “soulmate”, or merely a temporary escape from his marriage?
