SANDAKAN: The establishment of the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Sandakan Women’s Council is set to empower women as agents of cultural preservation while strengthening their role in local social and economic development.

Jetama Water Sdn Bhd Chairman Liau Fui Fui said the launch of the KDCA Sandakan Women’s Council reflected the committee’s commitment to elevating the cultural sector to greater heights.

“This is what we want to see – charismatic women who can inspire others.

“I hope that with the formation of the KDCA Sandakan Women’s Council, the committee will continue to empower, preserve, and most importantly, safeguard the authenticity of our cultural identity handed down from our ancestors, even as we face the challenges of modernisation,” she said when officiating the launch ceremony, recently.

As a show of support for strengthening the role of women and the Kadazan Dusun Murut Rungus (KDMR) culture, Liau also contributed RM10,000 to the newly-established council to assist in implementing future cultural and community-based programmes.

In conjunction with the launch, a workshop on Judging Techniques, Hairstyling, and Traditional Costumes for Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan was held earlier the same day, attracting over 40 female participants.

The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and traditional skills, in line with the council’s mission to promote and preserve KDMR culture among women in Sandakan.

Also present were KDCA Central Women’s Council Chairperson Datuk Tindarama Joanna Kitingan, along with KDCA leaders from the state and district levels.
