NGCP again issues yellow alert for Visayas grid

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has again issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Sunday, June 28, as major coal plants continue to remain offline while demand is expected to be high.

The yellow alert will be between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. as peak demand is estimated to reach 2,292 megawatts (MW), while available supply is only at 2,560 MW.

NGCP said that 32 plants are on forced outage, while 14 plants are running on derated capacities for a total of 974.8 MW unavailable to the grid.

The major coal plants that are still offline are Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), and Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW).

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not often lead to power interruptions.
