Is it true that UMNO badly wants a landslide victory as they did in Johor and Melaka state elections? More so during a monsoon?
That is certainly a weird and cruel strategic move from a party that is short of ideas and keen only on regaining power.
Are they forgetting that the people whom they are supposed to serve would suffer being forced out to vote in floods and pouring rain risking life and limbs?
Or do they expect voters to stay away from polling stations because of the weather and thereby win hands down?
According to some street-smart UMNO pundits in kampung coffeeshops who are sold on that very idea by their party president before his recent acquittal, they seem to believe that the less the turnout the greater the chance of them winning an election thereby regaining their power and returning to Putrajaya.
Let's see whether Zahid changes his tune now that he is let off the hook.
All political parties are against holding an election during the rainy season. So early in September, Zahid challenged them to hold an election as soon as possible like in October.
But the rain poured heavily in the middle of September as if nature too was trying to show its wrath upon the arrogance of the UMNO president who was reluctant to give due respect and sympathy for the rakyat.
However, that was before his acquittal. Now that he is acquitted perhaps he would be more repentant and in less hurry to hold an election.
Meanwhile, Taman Sri Muda flood victims are adamant that a general election should not be held during the monsoon season.
They told The Malaysian Insight that the government must not consider making such a "cruel move" just to win elections. (Source)
To Zahid and UMNO we would call upon them to be more considerate of the people. Stop this arrogance and the hunger for power.
Worry more about the Monsoon and less about winning at the expense of the people.
Do give a "damn" about the people who might have to wade in flood waters and wait for hours in the pouring rain during a monsoon just to vote.
UMNO must learn to emphasise with the people more and be less arrogant if it wanted to win the hearts and minds of Malaysians everywhere. Prove it.
