Zahid Hamidi for PM? Really? No, it's not true. It's just fake news!

When we heard that clarification everyone breathed a big sigh of relief and said "Thank God for that!"

But we do not really know what Zahid's supporters thought about that piece of good news but for the general public, it was indeed a welcome relief.

Here's how it all started.

In recent days news broke out over social media that Zahid, the incumbent UMNO president, recently acquitted of 40 criminal charges was rumoured to be UMNO'S choice for the post of Prime Minister in the next General Election.

During the previous week, a statement went viral on social media saying that UMNO's supreme council had already agreed to choose Zahid, as the poster boy for the forthcoming General Election.

It also stated that the decision would be discussed and decided upon at an MKT or the supreme council meeting, on the following Friday.

But on 24th September Ahmad Maslan UMNO's secretary-general denied that viral statement. He told the press to ignore that as fake news. (The Vibes)

He denied that the Supreme Council (MKT) had made a decision to appoint UMNO President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as a candidate of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition for the post of Prime Minister.

That's a welcome relief for everyone. Well, maybe not for Zahid's supporters.

Although Zahid is acquitted by the court and we are willing to accept that decision, yet the public perception of him as an alleged wrongdoer still lingers.

In politics perception is everything. Managing that negative perception might be one of the hardest tasks for UMNO to "sell" him to the general public as a worthy candidate for the highest office in the land.

For us political observers, UMNO may be better off fielding a candidate that would be more acceptable and free from any perceived wrongdoing, be it real or imagined, in order to make headway against tremendous opposition over an incumbent that has been tarnished in the court of public opinion.
