How did we get here?
For Tun M it has been a long journey for a smalll town medical practitioner in Alor Setar to Putrajaya and becoming PM twice with plenty of achievements to his credit.
But that's a subject better left for historians to ponder.
However, for the immediate future Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) a group of Malay-based parties will field Tun M as a PM candidate for the third and the last time.
This is a move that some skeptics may regard as Mahathir's last stand.
Or it is made out to be as a last stand by a party newly established by Tun M himself. But he himself appears reluctant to accept the post.
Mahdzir Ibrahim, GTA deputy information chief said that Tun Mahathir considers his involvement at next GE as part of a “jihad”, a kind of holy war, to heal the country from corruption and destructive leadership.

In facf, it looks like a sort of religious war perhaps for GTA, where Tun M is wanted for "his wisdom and influence, particularly in crisis management" which are still considered as relevant, said Mahdzir Ibrahim. FMT.
Besides, according to the deputy info chief should GTA a party yet to be registered, gain power, Tun M's expertise as a statesman would be needed to helm the nation for the third, and possibly last time.
But Tun M himself said he would only hold on to the position for “maybe just one year” instead of a full term.
The question then is would he be able to do in one year what he could not have achieved during his 22 years in office.
If eradication of corruption were one of those goals, a year in office might not be adequate considering how widespread the disease has become. But that remains to be seen. Tun M might just have a few aces up his sleeves.
We hope this last stand would not be like during his second time in office where he left the country in chaos by resigning from the post of PM leaving Muhyiddin and company to sneak into office via the backdoor.
In any case, at 97 Tun M's stand would definitely be his last.
There is no one in the world who at that age is still leading a nation.
Our only hope is that Mahathir's last stand would not be like Custer's Last Stand, at the Battle of the Little Bighorn which marked the most decisive Native American victory and the worst U.S. Army defeat in the long Plains Indian War.
But if our natives would come to their senses and vote out the corrupt leaders then Tun M's effort would be far reaching indeed and his last stand would be more meaningful than that of Custer's.
