PADANG TERAP: The Malaysian Meteorological Department has confirmed Padang Terap in Kedah is experiencing a Level Two heatwave.

This classification indicates daily maximum temperatures are ranging from 37 to 40 degrees Celsius.

The alert also extends to the Northeast district of Penang, Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar in Perak, Jerantut in Pahang, and Rembau in Negeri Sembilan.

A Level One alert is issued when temperatures reach between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days. A heatwave is declared when temperatures hit 37 to 40 degrees Celsius over the same period.

MetMalaysia advised the public to check the latest daily hot weather status on its official website.

The department also marked World Meteorological Day, observed under the theme “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow”. It emphasised the critical role of accurate monitoring and technology in safeguarding lives and the environment.

“Through continuous weather monitoring, we can improve forecasting, issue early warnings, and take swift action,” the department stated in a Facebook post.

MetMalaysia also commemorated Malaysia’s 68th year as a member of the World Meteorological Organisation. This reflects the nation’s commitment to global cooperation for societal well-being.

In a separate post, director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip expressed gratitude to all department personnel for their dedication. He highlighted their work in daily monitoring and weather balloon launches.

“While many are asleep, MetMalaysia personnel remain steadfast in fulfilling their responsibilities,” he said.

He also thanked weather and climate researchers for advancing the understanding of past climate patterns. Their work guides efforts toward a more sustainable future.
